We gathered every charm we could find: pennies, horseshoes, clovers. We filled the space between us with luck, hoping it would act as a bridge.
Instead the symbols became the landscape.
What was meant to close the distance began to measure it. We tried to buy our way across with charms and signs, but the very things meant to help us, became the odds we couldn't beat.
The closer we get, the further apart we are.
